Jefferson – A Pretty Place

Watertown Democrat, 11 14 1861

The most romantic groves, picturesque landscapes and sylvan scenes that one can imaging are to be found to our south, where one may fancy some wildwood nymph has her grotto, where thicket and fell are so finely intermingled that one can never weary of turning hither and thither . . . Suddenly, a turn in the road and some place meets your view.  One moment you gaze, and then cry out “JEFFERSON!”  Yes, Jefferson is there and you had gone nearly round it in your drive.  Well, Jefferson is a thriving and pretty place, and I’m in love with some of its habitations, beautiful streets, busy population, and its very quietude.  I should not object to a residence there (out of jail), by any means, which is more than I can say of some other places beyond out city.   MAG.
