Hebron Community Church
Abstracted from Jefferson County Union, 14 16 2004
With a congregation numbering in the low 30s, Hebron
Community Church has found a unique way to fill its coffers and possibly its
pews.
The rural church now doubles as The Chapel on the Hill, a place
where people of all backgrounds and affiliations may hold their wedding.
For the past year, Hebron Community Church has drawn
small weddings from across the county and beyond.
Hebron Community Church is located at N2349 County
Highway D, nine miles east of Fort Atkinson in the Town of Hebron.
Hebron Community Church is 166 years old, but the
building was constructed in 1899 after lightning struck the first sanctuary on
the same spot.
The church was more of a teaching ministry, where
young pastors would serve for a few years before going off to bigger
congregations. The students lived at the parsonage next door.
The original stained-glass windows decorate the
church's east and north sides, and modern, more abstract stained-glass windows
along the church's south side fill the sanctuary with swirls of color.
The sanctuary's size is modest, seating perhaps 100
people, but an adjoining room opens up to seat another 50 people in full view
of the proceedings.
